PARIS, FRANCE – Ending conjectures on the fate of spanish label Balenciaga following Alexander Wang’s departure this July, Kering – Balenciaga’s parent company announced Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia as the new artistic director effective immediately .
Welcoming Demna, Kering’s CEO expressed his excitement, “I am delighted to welcome Demna Gvasalia, a powerful emerging force in today’s creative world, as artistic director of Balenciaga. Demna Gvasalia embodies a unique approach to the profession, marked by a sociological observation of the wardrobe’s essentials and the way he remains humble and rigorous in his creative work. I am convinced that he will lead Balenciaga to a successful future.”
Demna, 34, who previously worked at Louis Vuitton and Maison Margiela, and is currently a designer at Vetements (which literally means clothes in French), an up-and-coming label that was among the eight finalists for the LVMH (LVMH Moët Hennessy) Prize, said in an interview with WWD, “I am extremely honoured and excited to be given the opportunity to bring my creative vision to Balenciaga, a house with such an exceptional history of pushing the boundaries of modernity in fashion, I am looking forward to further [expand] the DNA of the house and, together with the team, to write a new chapter in its history.”
Demna is expected to stage his first show for Balenciaga’s Fall/Winter Collection in March 2016 during Paris Fashion Week.
