The classic piece of clothing, immortalised by Burberry was produced at the time of the First World War by Thomas Burberry. The predecessor of the trench coat , the Tielocken, was created in 1895 and was made of a fabric that revolutionised history: gabardine, created and patented by Burberry. The fabric was innovative, being waterproof, yet flexible and comfortable, ideal for London ‘s humid climate.
Necessary for soldiers at war, the trench coat was gradually becoming popular and getting to the wardrobe of personalities ranging from Arthur Conan Doyle, Winston Churchill and Audrey Hepburn.
A unisex and democratic piece, after more than a century since its creation, the basic structure remains the same. Under the creative direction of Christopher Bailey, the trench coat is revisited every season with new fabrics, cuts, prints and offering the possibility of customisation to its customers. Its essence, however, is the same.
