An Australian in New York. The looks that won new fans at NYFW.
Sydney born, and now honorary New Yorker, Dion Lee has taken a different tack at NYFW, and the acclaim has echoed far beyond his native Australia where the label still has its biggest audience. “My aim from the beginning was to be considered a designer on the world stage rather than an ‘Australian designer’,” Dion said recently, and the fall/winter 2016 collection is a decisive step into the global spotlight.
Relegating the cocktail numbers to the back of the wardrobe, he has instead shown a more developed look—bold, functional, yet also more embellished. It’s a look for everyday glamour in a concrete jungle, with strategically split midi skirts, a limited palette and outerwear as a focal point.
Dion told the Guardian, “The silhouette is more sculptural and the fabrications are more voluminous. There’s a lot more movement in the clothes. Simultaneously, there’s an ease and comfort that runs through this collection.”
