SPRING 1883 Sydney will see galleries from Australia and beyond take over the entire Establishment Hotel in central Sydney from September 9-12. Naturally, this event will cheekily abut the 2015 edition of the Sydney Contemporary art fair which is at Carriageworks from September 12-13.
Last year, Melbourne witnessed the inaugural SPRING 1883 art fair at The Windsor Hotel which ran parallel to the Melbourne Art Fair at the Royal Exhibition Building. Instead of the barn-like atmosphere of the (main) art fair where galleries peddle their stable of artists to crowds annually, the historic hotel provided an intimate and alluring backdrop. Here, art enthusiasts and the curious were free to peruse contemporary art in luxurious hotel rooms decked out by galleries including Melbourne’s Utopian Slumps and Sutton Gallery, Sydney’s Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, and international additions including Michael Lett (Auckland), New York’s Foxy Production and Berlin’s ARNDT.
Partly voyeuristic, part art party, the formula was so successful that the the founders of the fair, Vasili Kaliman (Station), Geoff Newton (Neon Parc), and Vikki McInnes (Sarah Scout Presents), took the concept to Sydney.
